Walk from Long Sutton Golf Club 20th August 2019

Around fifty members turned out for the walk on a morning that started fine and then delivered a couple of light showers before we returned to the Golf Club for lunch.

We left The Club on time and joined the footpath that skirted the edge of the golf course on it’s way to the junction of Ilchester Lane with Knole Hill Lane.

After climbing one of the two stiles we encountered on the walk, we turned to follow Knole Hill Lane and Stone Meade Lane around the base of Knole Hill into the village of Knole.

On the edge of the village, we paused to watch the birth of a calf before walking on into the middle of the village. Here we caught up with the leading group of walkers who, failing to see what was happening in the field, had walked on ahead and then wondered where we were.

We left Knole by way of the lane known as Knole Causway and along the way to Long Sutton took shelter from a rain shower.

In Long Sutton we walked through the Church Yard and then paused by The Green before following  Martock Road to the edge of the village to join a path that took us westwards to Withmoor Drove and The River Yeo.

On reaching the river we turned southwards to follow the river to Load Bridge and rejoin the Martock Road. Here we turned northwards to follow the road the short distance to the Golf Club entrance.

The walk organised, by Nicky and Tony Jones, had been around five miles, generally level and over dry ground.

The September walk, being organised by Tony and Lesley Nesbitt, will be from Waynes Bistro at West Camel.

Nicky delivering her briefing before the start of the walk. The weather this time was better than at the start of the walk we did from here in June 2007, as you will see from the next picture.

You may recognise a few of the faces from twelve years ago.

On the edge of Knole we came across this cow, with a very young calf, beside the lane. The cow, further away in the next enclosure, gave birth to a calf whilst we watched.
